How to transport a mattress and box spring during a move?

Prepare mattress and box spring for the move.

1 - How to roll or fold a mattress?

This is probably one of the questions that people ask the most moving.

Let's be clear, we only recommend rolling or folding a mattress as a last resort, especially if it's a spring mattress!

Twisting a mattress will almost certainly damage it.

If you have no choice, here's how:

  • Fold the mattress widthwise. The side you sleep on must be on the inside,
  • Close the whole thing with several straps that you can get in a DIY store,
  • Transport it on a wheeled cart to the truck.

2 - How to protect your mattress during a move?

Another article mentioned the hand truck as the best investment when moving.

The mattress cover is undoubtedly the best candidate for second place.

Generally made of plastic material, it is used both as protection against shocks and dirt during transport and in the context of medium or long-term storage in a box, for example.

If the mattress travels next to objects that could damage it, feel free to add extra coverage over the contact points.

The HOMEBOX tip: you can leave the mattress pad and bottom sheet in place to save time on arrival and provide additional protection for the mattress. ;)

3 - Dismantle your bed base

Unfortunately, we are not all created equal when dismantling a box spring.

Indeed, the feasibility of the operation will greatly depend on the type of bed base.

Thus, a bed base provided with wooden slats, which is also often delivered in separate parts, can be disassembled without difficulty in less than an hour with the help of another person.

Alternatively, the mission can quickly become much more difficult if your box spring is a first prize or electric spring.

In any case, take as much care as possible to dismantle the legs to facilitate transport and storage of the bed base.

Transporting the mattress or box spring during the move

Before considering moving your bedding, make sure the path is clear from the bedroom to the truck, both on departure and arrival. Then, open the doors wide and move all the awkward furniture and boxes.

1 - Transporting a box spring or mattress by truck

Using a van is the best transportation option.

Store your mattress upright and first and stick it against the side of the truck.

It will thus serve as a wedge for the bed base that you can slide next to it. And because things are well made, the latter will keep the mattress straight, thus avoiding bending.

2 - Transporting a box spring or mattress by car

The second transport option but also, by far, the most complex.

We do not recommend transporting bedding on the roof of a car for several reasons:

  • This poses a risk to your mattress and box spring,
  • This entails a risk for your car and, therefore, for yourself,
  • This entails a risk for passers-by and urban equipment if the load detaches because it is poorly fixed or pushed by the wind.

However, if you are determined to use your vehicle, place the bed base and then the mattress on the roof bars, then use and abuse the tie-down straps to secure your bedding (at least two in width and one in length).

Transport duvets and pillows during a move

Here, your objective is twofold: to ensure the integrity of your household linen (hygiene, cleanliness) while saving as much space as possible.

The optimal (and brilliant) solution is found on the side of vacuum bags, also called compression bags.

Compression bags are used like classic textile storage bags with one exception: they have a valve to connect a vacuum cleaner hose and create an air vacuum.

This maneuver will compress the content for an impressive saving of space.

These covers can quickly become your best storage allies if you live on a small surface.
